Just the FAQs.

YES, I want my marketing message to be heard. What happens next?

First, visit my contact page and email me or use the handy form to tell me about your project.

I like to start every relationship with a (free) phone consultation so I can learn more your needs. During this call, I will ask some questions--what you need, when you need it, what your goals are--and ask to see your company's existing materials.
Loud and Clear Copy FAQ
Following our conversation, I will create a customized proposal for you, containing project details and an estimate for my work. If you decide you'd like to proceed, I'll ask you to round up as much background material as possible to help me get up to speed quickly. This could include existing flyers, brochures, fact sheets, web pages--anything you think would be helpful. Remember, the more information you provide, the better I can capture your brand's voice and style in my writing.

Once I have submitted the first copy draft, I'll ask you to review the work and collect your comments, questions, suggestions, and changes. Then we'll talk and I will make revisions based on our discussion.

What if you aren't experienced in my industry? How can you write for my business?

A skilled copywriter can write for any industry. As a seasoned communications professional, all I need is some background information and research time. The rest of the tools I already have: a head for great strategy, an ear for great copy, and the critical ability to see the world through your prospect's eyes.

How do you charge--by the project or by the hour?

That's up to you! Some clients prefer that I quote my fees on a per-project basis, as this gives them a better idea of the actual cost right away. Other clients prefer to pay a set hourly fee. Some jobs are difficult to estimate (such as proofreading; editing existing pieces; writing newsletter articles) and for these, I find an hourly rate is more appropriate.

Whatever the case, you can be sure that the estimate you receive is tailored to your project and your specific needs.

What do your fees include?

My fees include research, concept generation, telephone discussions, writing, and one round of revisions. Again, your initial telephone consultation is free.

My fees do not include out-of-pocket expenses, out-of-area travel, courier or expedited delivery fees.

I'm happy to adjust my rates for small jobs and editing p
rojects that just need a little polish. But given the chance, I am able to transform my clients' "small editing jobs" into sleek, compelling pieces imbued with a powerful new voice. (Don't worry--I'll always discuss my ideas with you before I dig in, to make sure our goals are the same.)

Do you require a deposit?

Yes, I require a 25-percent deposit for most projects, with the balance due within 30 days of the final revision. I'm happy to work with you to determine an appropriate payment schedule for longer-term projects.

What happens if I need to cancel my freelance writing project before it's complete, or change its direction significantly mid-way through?

If you wish to cancel your project--for any reason, or no reason--after I have started work, payment will be prorated only for the time I have put into the project to that point. The same applies should you decide to change either the direction or scale of a piece significantly. In this case, I'll write up a new estimate and service contract to reflect the new project.

How will I receive my copy?

I usually send my clients' copy via email in a Microsoft Word attachment--but I'll do my best to accommodate whatever method you prefer.

This all sounds pretty good, but I'm still not sure about hiring a freelance copywriter. Why should I trust you?

Having worked as an in-house copywriter for companies that occasionally hired freelancers, I understand your hesitation. I've seen my share of "consultants" come and go. Incredibly, a lot of those freelancers seemed more concerned with "being creative" than with actually selling product or building customer relationships.

That's not me. When you hire me for a job, I write for you--not for my portfolio, and not to show your customers how clever I am. Every word is geared toward communicating your message as clearly and compellingly as I can. Just like an in-house writer who has a vested interest in your success, I feel a responsibility to deliver great work that will increase demand for your products and services, and enhance the image and recognition of your brand.

You're hiring me because you want results. I'll be committed to your success.

What kinds of consulting do you do?

As a strategic direct-response copywriter of 20 years, my focus is on communicating your written message purposefully and powerfully. But over the years, I've developed a keen eye for smart design, too, and I will likely be able to offer suggestions that punch up the visual impact of your materials.

In addition, I can help you focus the positioning of a product, service, or company brand. And my direct marketing experience means I can help you fine-tune your existing campaigns, and even conceptualize new ones.
